Picture window installation
A picture window is a large fixed pane — it does not open. With no sash hardware or meeting rail it delivers the most glass, the most light and the cleanest view of any style, and it seals completely because there is nothing to move.
How it works
There is no operation. The glass is fixed in the frame. Picture units are usually combined with casement, awning or double-hung windows on one or more sides so the group still ventilates.
Where it fits well
- Framing a specific view — a yard, trees, a valley
- High or hard-to-reach walls, and gable ends
- Living rooms where an adjacent operable window already handles ventilation
- Maximizing daylight in a room
What to weigh
- No ventilation on its own — plan an operable unit nearby
- Large single panes are heavy; access and installation are planned accordingly
- Glass package matters more here because the pane is big and often sun-facing
